Frequently Asked Questions
Are plastic sippy cups really that bad?
Yes — and I don't say that to scare you, just to be real with you! Plastic cups (even BPA-free ones) contain other chemicals like BPS and phthalates that can leach into liquids, especially when exposed to heat, fat, or acid. So that warm milk or juice sitting in a plastic cup? Not ideal. Swapping to stainless steel, glass, or silicone is one of the easiest and most impactful low-tox swaps you can make for your little one.
What is the safest material for a kids' sippy cup?
The safest materials are stainless steel, food-grade silicone, and glass. Each has its perks — stainless steel is super durable and keeps drinks cold, silicone is soft and flexible (great for babies), and glass is the most inert option (no leaching at all). I personally love the options I've rounded up above because they check all these boxes without sacrificing cuteness!
Is silicone actually safe for babies and toddlers?
Food-grade silicone is considered one of the safest materials for kids' cups and feeding products. It's free from BPA, phthalates, and other harmful plastics. The key is making sure it's food-grade silicone — the Mushie Silicone Sippy Cup on my list is a great example of this done right.
What chemicals should I look for (and avoid) on sippy cup labels?
You want to steer clear of: BPA, BPS, BPF (basically any "BP" anything), phthalates, PVC, and lead. A cup that says "BPA-free" alone isn't enough — I always look for brands that are fully third-party tested and transparent about their materials. When in doubt, stick to the brands on my list above — I've done the vetting for you!
At what age can kids switch from a sippy cup to a regular cup?
Most kids are ready to start transitioning around after starting solid foods. The EZPZ Mini Cup + Straw Training System I recommend is actually designed with this developmental milestone in mind — it was developed with speech-language pathologist (SLP) input, which I love. Learning to drink from a straw is an important part of oral motor development!
Do non-toxic sippy cups cost more?
Some do, yes — but many of the options I've listed are really affordable, especially for how long they last. Stainless steel and silicone cups hold up for years vs. plastic ones that get scratched and worn (and leach more chemicals as they degrade). Think of it as a one-time investment vs. constantly replacing cheap plastic cups.
Where can I shop these non-toxic sippy cup picks?
All of my picks are linked directly in this post! I use ShopMy to curate my favorites so you can find everything in one place. I only recommend products I've personally researched and would let my child use.
